What is a Canker Sore?

Canker sores, also called Apthous ulcers, are round, white sores with a red edge or halo inside of the mouth (on or under tongue, inside cheeks or lips, at the base of gums). They usually last from 1–3 weeks and can be as large as 1 centimeter in diameter.

Canker sores can be experienced at any age, but occur most frequently between 10–40 years. Canker sores are not contagious and although anyone can get canker sores, they tend to be an inherited condition.

Causes

Many factors can contribute to canker sores, including:

• Stress or tissue injury
